Having now idea how the song would turn out, the other members of the band recorded their various parts as directed by Freddie. What started out as a small interlude,\”Galileos\”, became the famous operatic feature of the the entire song. This intertwined with the hard rock and ballad parts of the song during the final mix.

A revival!

During the the making of \”Wayne\\\’s World 2\” in 1992, I think it was, this track was used while the crew were going down town in the \\\’Murph Mobile\\\’. Parts of the original video were included in the film while the boys sang along, doing their stuff. It was a bit out of the feel of the film but what a way to wake the fans up!

The title only came to light towards the end of the recording of the song. \”Queen Bohemian Rhapsody\” is now regarded as one the all time great of popular music. Of course the band had other outstanding tracks and songs in the history of thier long and colorful carrea. We will rock you, Love of My life and many other too.

The so-called “flower duet” is nothing else but a famous part from a Romantic opera by Leo Delibes, composed in the 1880s. Included in the work entitled Lakme, the “flower duet” still fascinates listeners by the intensity of emotion it triggers. This is the reason for which it has been included in many advertisements, movie soundtracks, not to mention its over-use by the British Airlines and television shows.

How come that a classic piece of music can enjoy such mass popularity? Given the fact that the flower duet suggests a calm descent from wispy clouds, it is not at all curious that the British Airlines have come to associate it with the image of their jetliners floating through calm skies. Moreover, the tune is so popular nowadays, that you may even download the “flower duet” as a ring tone for the mobile phone.

In the economy of the original musical performance, the “flower duet” helps the audience enter the atmosphere of the opera by the evocation of an exotic natural corner. Right at the beginning of the opera, the main character, Lakme and one of her servants stop by the river to pick flowers and interpret this “flower duet” that has become the most famous and well-known part of Delibes’ entire work.

Why is the “flower duet” necessary in this part of the opera? As the entire action goes on in India, the audience needs to actually be able to grasp the beauty of places as an integrated part of the work. 10. Fried – brain sandwiches

Long before the era of Mad-Cow Disease, a sandwich made from fried calves’ brain, thinly sliced on white bread was a common item on the menus in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The sandwich is still available in the Ohio River Valley, where the brains are now heavily battered and served on hamburger buns. In El Salvador and Mexico beef brains, lovingly called sesos in Spanish, are used in tacos and burritos. The brains have a mushy texture and very little flavor on their own so the addition of copious amounts of hot sauce definitely helps.

9. Haggis

A traditional Scottish dish, haggis is made with the minced heart, liver and lung of a sheep mixed with onion, spices, oatmeal, salt and stock, and boiled in the sheep’s stomach for a few hours. Larousse Gastronomique, a popular encyclopedia of gastronomic delights, claims that haggis has “an excellent nutty texture and delicious savory flavor.” Haggis is available year-round in Scottish supermarkets and made with an artificial casing rather than a sheep’s stomach. In fact some are sold in cans to be heated in a microwave before eating. Similar dishes can be found in other European countries with goat, pork or beef used instead of sheep.

8. Bugs

The practice of eating insects for food is called entomophagy and is fairly common in many parts of the world, with the exceptions of Europe and North America (though bugs are apparently a favorite with the television show “Fear Factor”). It is not uncommon to find vendors selling fried grasshoppers, crickets, scorpions, spiders and worms on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand. Insects are high in protein and apparently consist of important fatty acids and vitamins. In fact flour from drying and grinding up mealworm can be and is often used to make chocolate chip cookies. So next time you think there is a fly in your soup, it may actually just be part of the presentation.

7. Rocky Mountain Oysters

What is so strange about oysters? Probably the fact that they’re not the kind you find at the bottom of the ocean, but rather a fancy name given to deep-fried testicles of a buffalo, bull or boar. Rocky Mountain oysters (also called Prairie Oysters) are well-known and regularly enjoyed, in certain parts of the United States and Canada, generally where cattle ranching is prevalent. The testicles are peeled, boiled, rolled in a flour mixture, and fried, then generally served with a nice cocktail sauce.

6. Stuffed Camel

The recipe for a whole stuffed camel kind of reads like a bad joke, with ingredients that include one whole camel, one whole lamb and 20 whole chickens. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the recipe as the largest item on any menu in the world, conveniently leaving out any concrete examples of this dish actually being eaten. Legend has it that that a whole stuffed camel is a traditional Bedouin dish seemingly prepared like a Russian Stacking Doll, where a camel is stuffed with a whole lamb, the lamb stuffed with the chickens and the chickens stuffed with eggs and rice. The entire concoction is then barbecued until cooked and served. Fact or fiction, the shear amount of food created by this dish makes it deserving of a place on the list.

5. Hakarl

Anthony Bourdain, known for eating some of the strangest foods in the world, claims that hakarl is the most disgusting thing he has ever eaten. Made by gutting a Greenland or Basking shark and then fermenting it for two to four months, hakarl is an Icelandic food that reeks with the smell of ammonia. It is available all year round in Icelandic stores and often served in cubes on toothpicks.

4. Fugu

Fugu is the Japanese word for the poisonous puffer fish, filled with enough of the poison tetrodotoxin to be lethal. Only specially-trained chefs, who undergo two to three years of training and have passed an official test, can prepare the fish. Some chefs will choose to leave a minute amount of poison in the fish to cause a tingling sensation on the tongue and lips as fugu can be quite bland. Perhaps the fuss of fugu is more in surviving the experience than the actual taste of the deadly fish.

3. Casu Marzu

Found in the city of Sardinia in Italy, casu marzu is a cheese that is home to live insect larvae. These larvae are deliberately added to the cheese to promote a level of fermentation that is close to decomposition, at which point the cheese’s fats are broken down. The tiny, translucent worms can jump up to half a foot if disturbed, which explains why some people prefer to brush off the insects before enjoying a spoonful of the pungent cheese.

2. Sannakji

With sashimi and sushi readily available the world over, eating raw seafood is no longer considered a dining adventure. The Korean delicacy sannakji however, is something quite different, as the seafood isn’t quite dead. Live baby octopus are sliced up and seasoned with sesame oil. The tentacles are still squirming when this dish is served and, if not chewed carefully, the tiny suction cups can stick to the mouth and throat. This is not a dish for the fainthearted.

Balut seems to be on every “strange food” list, usually at the top, and for good reason. Works on the Ford’s Interceptor has begun inside the Aria workshop. And already the crew of the Aria is meeting some problems like body lacking doors, wheels, front fenders, headlights, bumpers, seats or hood. But that is not the worst part yet because four of the guys from Aria are already having a hard time to fit the 400 horsepower V-8 engine into place. Will these guys panic? No not in this business. Panic has no place in the business of building million dollar concept cars and the Interceptor is definitely not an exemption.

The Aria team has never missed a deadline and the Interceptor project with all its problems is not going to be their first failure. And finally after all the problems encountered during the creation of the Interceptor it has left Aria headquarters in perfect condition and just in time last Friday night. The lustrous blue highway cruiser was trucked to Detroit where it will make its debut at the North American International Auto Show. The show will be officially open for the public on January 13, 2007.

Aria on the Interceptor

According to Aria President Clive Hawkins, “Aria has never missed a deadline even if it’s an around-the-clock fight to the finish. But of course the whole process is not without a drama. You’ve got to watch out since tempers usually get a little short which is understandable because building a concept car is a laborious, expensive, and a painstaking process plus the whole time element makes it even more into a temper-rising endeavor.”

The likes of the Interceptor usually cost $1million to $5million dollars or more basically because all the Ford parts used are top-of-the-line. Aside from that, coming up with the solid representation of the concept car is like transferring ideas from the design board to computer and then to reality—and that takes a huge amount of money. And what does the automaker get in return? Just loads of publicity at auto shows which they hope can help them in encouraging buyers to purchase their cars. And the sad part is after investing huge amount of money on the concept car there’s no guarantee that it will go into production.

Building a concept car can usually take 18,000 man-hours. At the Aria workshop most of the parts used for the concept car whether it’s for the body and instrument panel, knob and window – are manually made or created using several hi-tech machines found at the workshop. Plus, the builders often work from nothing other than a full-size clay model of the concept car.

Ford’s advanced design director Freeman Thomas has made regular weekly visits to Aria to check on the progress of the Interceptor as well as to ensure that all the finer details are not left out. Plus he also needs to make sure that all parts fit perfectly so that nothing will go wrong during the auto show.

Oscar Arias Sanchez is the current president of the country of Costa Rica. He first assumed office on May 8, 2006 and is currently serving his second term. He had first been elected president on May 8, 1986 and served until May 8, 1990.

President Arias is best known as one of the driving figures behind the end of the Central American civil wars during the 1980s. For his efforts, Oscar Arias Sanchez received the Nobel Peace Price in 1987.

Aside from that, President Arias was also awarded the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism. The Economists for Peace and Security also accepted him as a trustee. President Arias is a member of the Board of Directors of International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims.

Personal History

President Arias was born on September 13, 1940 in Heredia, Costa Rica. He was born to an upper class family, a status which made it possible for him to undergo secondary schooling at the Colegio Saint Francis in San Jose, Costa Rica.

After finishing his secondary schooling, Oscar Arias Sanchez flew to the United States in order to study medicine in Boston University. However, he changed his mind after a while and returned to Costa Rica. He finished law and economics instead at the University of Costa Rica. To continue educating himself, Arias flew to the United Kingdom in 1967, where he went to school in the London School of Economics. Eight years later in 1974, he received a political science doctorate degree from the University of Essex.

The Costa Rican president is also the holder of over 50 honorary degrees from different universities.

The National Liberation Party and his First Presidency

Arias joined the Partido Liberacion Nacional and ran under its banner for president in 1986. The PLN is known for being the party under which several popular Costa Rican presidents belong to, like its founder Jose Figueres. Under the same banner, Arias achieved victory.

He then went on to shift Costa Rican economy to focus on non-traditional agriculture and tourism, which some of his own party mates critized as shifting to a neoliberal economic model. The PLN, after all, focuses on social democrat teachings, which they claimed Arias abandoned during his administration.

President Arias also reinstated the standard academic tests that students have to take upon finishing primary and secondary schooling. He also pushed for the creation of the Central American Parliament, although currently he announced Costa Rica’s non-participation in the Parliament.

Esquipulas Accord

By the time Arias became the president of Costa Rica, the Central American countries were engaged in violent and long-running civil wars. In May 1986, President Arias was one of the five Central American presidents that attended the first Esquipulas Summit in Esquipulas, Guatemala.

The summit resulted into a Peace Plan which was submitted on February 15, 1987. From this peace plan, the Esquipulas Peace Process was drafted. The Process was a framework for resolving conflict and for economic cooperation between the beleaguered Central American states.

Another summit was then held by the five Central American presidents including Arias, which resulted to the “Esquipulas II” accord that was signed on August 7, 1987 in Guatemala City.

Despite rejection by the United States due to its recognition of the Nicaraguan Sandinista regime, the accoes was successful as it paved the way for the 1990 reconciliation and ending of the 30-year Guatemalan Civil War, and the peace agreement in El Salvador.

Arias’ efforts led to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, although there are criticisms that he has plagiarized propositions made by Vinicio Cerezo of Guatemala as his own.

Second Presidency

The Costa Rican judiciary formerly forbade former presidents from running for a second term. However, in 2004, the Constitutional Court made a very controversial decision removing that restriction. Following that, Arias announced his intention to run for a second presidency opposite Otton Solis, Otto Guevara, Ricardo Toledo and Antonio Alvarez.

Solis and Arias were the foremost among the five presidential candidates. Competition was stiff, with only a 0.4% or 3,200-vote difference after the first count. Voters who abstained from voting for the other candidates even voted for Solis at the last minute, resulting in the thin margin of votes. It was seen as an effort to prevent Arias from winning.

One of the first decisions he made on his second Presidency was to end Costa Rica’s recognition of Taiwan as the Republic of China, and instead recognized the mainland People’s Republic of China.

Tendinitis

Just recently, on May 20, 2008, President Arias was diagnosed as having a nonmalignant cyst on his vocal cords by the Philadelphia Ears, Nose and Throat Associates. Doctors then advised him not to talk for a month, after which surgery may be performed if his condition did not improve.

Tuned Percussion is great fun – most of the Time! However, it can be a source of headaches (literally!) for music teachers if its not implemented in a careful way.

This article is to give you some hints and tricks on how to maintain and look after the instruments, plus the types of music to play which have the greatest chances of success.

1)Organization is the key

With tuned percussion instruments in a music class you have to be totally organized.

Each instrument needs a shelf where it lives permanently – so that students know where it goes back after it has been used. You’ve got to establish these places early in the routine and have ordering about how the students go about picking them out and playing them.

2) Go All Diatonic or All Chromatic

One of the big problems is that many orff style tuned percussion instruments are sold in two bits – the main “diatonic” part of the instrument, plus they offer a “chromatic extension” which is simply the black notes on a separate box resonator.

In my experience these things are far more hassle than they are worth, particularly for elementary school classes. You are much better off with just a diatonic instrument that isn’t in “two bits”

Organizing a class so that everyone has to get the main instrument, and then get the chromatic extension and put it in front is far too difficult for most elementary classes.

In theory of course the elementary class can use just the diatonic bit, and the more advanced can use the full chromatic.. but it rarely works that way!

The only schools where I’ve seen those chromatic extensions they are generally put away into a cupboard and never used!

Still, if you have more advanced or older students then you should get fully chromatic instruments to start with!

3) Play everything in C Major

One of the big “time wasters” is those substitute F sharp and B flat bars that are included with many of the diatonic instruments. These have to be a complete waste of time for teachers. Often you can spend half the class making sure that all the students have the right notes on their instruments, and then you’ll still hear something funny going on whenever you hear an “F” because one student has an F# on their instrument!

The best tip I have for this is to simply take those substitute bars, put them into a box and lock them away!

The best solution is to simply find music, transpose music or write music that is only in C MAJOR. That way you won’t be messing around chaning notes, and you can get on with making music!

4) Go for Wood – Not Metal – and get them all at once!

I’ve seen more broken “Metallophones” at schools than any other instrument. For some reason they always seem to have gotten lost bars and damaged rubber strips under the bars which result in a loud “clunk” whenever you try to play them!

Glockenspiels are very challenging for young children – the bars are really small… and piercing on the ears as well.

My advice… go for WOOD every time. diatonic xylophones, with a box resonator.

You should really take ALL your budget in one year and dedicate it to this – don’t buy one or two at once.. That will not suffice for a whole class. Get a class set of ten to twenty xylophones that are all identical and they will last for years.

Get one or two at a time and you’ll find that they get mixed up and no-one knows what bars and bits go with what instrument!

5) Mallets all identical – all in one place

One simple thing you can do is get a full set of mallets, and make them all identical!

If you get a box or a large jar and dedicate it to this purpose then students will know that they have to get and return the mallets to this location and they’ll get used to this procedure.

If you only have wooden xylophones then you won’t have to worry about different mallets for the glockenspiels and metallophones.
