A Rich Heritage of Artistic Performance at Opéra Garnier
An impressive 2000 seat Opera House in Paris, the Opéra Garnier is also known as the Palais Garnier. Featuring a magnificent façade this structure has hosted some fantastic musical performances since its inception.
Designed by Charles Garnier and featuring the Neo Baroque style, the structure is considered to be one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of its time.
The Opera National De Paris also uses this venue as one of its main performance sites. In the past it was the primary venue but the Opera moved once the L’Opera de Bastille was constructed in light of its more modern facilities.
The name of this structure has been changed constantly over the years through numerous falls of governments and other events including funding shortages. Another incident that plagued its construction during the early phases was that the ground that was set to be the construction site of the building was found to have a swamp that was located underneath and construction was halted. This ground was eventually pumped clean of its water before construction could begin.
It was only in late 1874 that the Opéra Garnier was finally completed and it was inaugurated with a lavish gala performance. Featuring gold leaf, velvet, nymphs and cherubim the interior is reminiscent of Baroque style.
The Opéra Garnier is also the setting of the world famous Phantom of the Opera which was inspired by some of the mishaps that occurred during the early days of this performing venue.
The structure is also elaborately decorates with various statues of Greek Gods, columns and marble friezes. Beyond this at the entrance located between the grand pillars that make the entrance are numerous statues of musical greats such as Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven and more.
The interiors also consist of spacious areas that are perfect for the mingling of guests when traversing the impressive theatre venue during the intermission. Since its initial construction the building became one of the most influential construction archetypes that has been used in several other countries abroad.
